Making a Murderer is an American web television series that first streamed on Netflix on December 18, 2015. The first season recounts the story of Steven Avery, a man who was imprisoned for the sexual assault and attempted murder of Penny Beerntsen, and who was later exonerated, only to be subsequently accused of the murder of Teresa Halbach.
Steven Avery (born July 9, 1962) is an American convict from Manitowoc County, Wisconsin who was accused of raping Penny Beernsten, and served 18 years in prison for a sexual assault conviction, but was released when DNA analysis pointed to another man. He was exonerated and released from prison on September 11, 2003.

The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting occurred on December 14, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut, when 20-year-old Adam Lanza fatally shot 20 children and 6 adult staff members. Prior to driving to the school, Lanza shot and killed his mother at their Newtown home. As first responders arrived at the scene, Lanza committed suicide by shooting himself in the head.
