On 9 August 2023, Ecuadorian politician and presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio was assassinated after leaving a campaign rally in Quito, while several others were injured, occurring 11 days prior to the 2023 Ecuadorian general election. One assailant was killed during the attack.
